This article discusses how the recession has caused the use of online dating to increase. Reasons for this include that onlinedating is cheaper, people have more time on their hands and it is also a form of comfort during these rough economic problems.
"Love Connection" 25 March 2009. ABC News Video. 5 April 2009. http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=7165905.

McRae, Shannon. “Coming Apart at the Seams: Sex, Text, and the Virtual Body” 6 Apr 2009.
McRae’s article represents the sexual freedom of the internet. The less one is repressed, the more open one is willing to be about themselves, which is why the internet may have grown in its popularity for dating. There are dating websites geared towards a diverse group of people, it is not simply a heterosexual society where people who identify as a different sexuality or have changed their gender are limited in dating options. By using the internet to date, a person can find someone they feel comfortable with who may go against the mainstream in their sexual orientation or fetishes.
"Singles Too Busy To Find Love? Studies Show 52% of Singles More Focused on Career". 5 April 2009. PowerHomeBiz.com. 5 April 2009 http://www.powerhomebiz.com/News/042009/singles-rings.htm.
This article talks about how online dating is so convenient for the busy working person.
Wahlstrom-Backe, Maria. "Freedome for Just One Night: The Promise and Threat of Information and Communication Technologies." Jan. 2007 6 Apr 2009.
Internet dating represents both the male and female population, this article addresses the transition of the internet, as well as the technological field, from being a male dominant area to an area open and used by men and women. The transition allows for more users to be available to create profiles on websites, and may also explain why internet dating is become more popular than traditional dating. This is a representation of sex and gender gaps being bridged.
Wilbur, Shawn. "An Archaeology of Cyberspaces." Internet Culture (1997): 45-55.
This article discusses what a virtual community is and how it is a sense of community for people. It also explains how it is based upon the use of words and people having common interests which is also what online dating is based upon.
